Storm Amy: Man seriously injured in 'weather-related incident' in Donegal

Gardaí and emergency services personnel attended the scene of the incident, which happened in Letterkenny shortly after 4.15pm.

A man has been seriously injured in a "weather-related incident" in Co Donegal as Storm Amy continues to impact the country.

Gardaí and emergency services personnel attended the scene of the incident, which happened in Letterkenny shortly after 4.15pm.

A garda spokesperson told the Irish Examiner that the incident "is ongoing, there is no further information available at this time".

A status red wind warning for Co Donegal was in place from 4pm until 6pm. A status red weather warning is the most severe warning Met Éireann issues and is rarely used. When it is, people in the affected areas are asked to take action to protect themselves and/or their properties, according ot the forecaster.

Donegal, along with Clare and all of Connacht, is under an status orange wind warning until 10pm on Friday night.

The rest of the country has been under a yellow wind warning since midday on Friday. The warning is currently set to lapse at midnight, though a trio of yellow warnings affecting 10 counties have been issued for Saturday.

Met Éireann meteorologist Linda Hughes told RTÉ Radio 1 that even after the red warning for Co Donegal lifts, there could be fallen trees and damage to power lines, so people should use "great caution".

It comes as ESB Networks said 184,000 homes, farms and businesses are without power, predominantly in Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon, Leitrim, and Cavan.

"With Met Éireann weather warnings still in place, and the dynamic nature of the event, further power outages can be expected throughout the evening," a spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said that due to the difficult conditions, it is likely that the majority of customers will not have their power restored on Friday night.
