Met Éireann is monitoring the remnants of Hurricane Humberto as the storm tracks across the Atlantic, with forecasters warning it could bring heavy rain and strong winds to Ireland by the weekend.

While it will weaken to an ex-hurricane before arrival, weather experts say it still has the potential to deliver unsettled conditions.

Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather said the jet stream could influence the system.

"Friday needs careful watching now as remnants of Humberto could re-intensify when it interacts with the jet stream," said Mr O'Reilly.

Either way, remnants of the Category 5 hurricane are expected to bring unsettled conditions across the country later in the week.

The west coast will likely see the worst of it as the weather system moves north.

Cork and Munster can expect their fair share of heavy rain — widespread by Friday afternoon — and strong winds before conditions settle again at the weekend.

For the immediate forecast, today will be dull and misty with hill fog, according to Met Éireann.

The forecaster said there will be scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle during the morning and early afternoon, followed by more persistent rain spreading across the country from the west later in the day.

Temperatures could reach 18C with light to moderate southerly winds, freshening in the west during the afternoon.

Tonight will be cloudy with mist and hill fog again. It will be wet at first with widespread rain, but the rain will move northwards, becoming lighter and patchier by morning.

Temperatures will not fall below 13C, with a moderate to fresh southerly breeze.

Tomorrow will be rather cloudy but dry for most, with scattered outbreaks of rain, most frequent in the west and north.

Some brighter intervals are possible, most likely in the east.

Temperatures could reach 19C with a moderate to fresh southerly breeze.
