Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns is to delay her return from maternity leave until after the summer.
The Cork South West TD gave birth to her first child on polling day in November.
It is understood there were medical complications since the birth and this is a factor in why she is taking some additional time off.
However, mother and daughter are understood to be doing very well now.
A Social Democrats spokesperson confirmed: “Holly will be returning from maternity leave in September.
“She is very grateful for this time with her baby and hugely appreciative of the support of the parliamentary party."
Cian O'Callaghan who stepped up to lead the party while Ms Cairns was on leave will now remain in place until her return.
“Cian, who has been doing a fantastic job as acting leader, is happy to continue in the role until Holly returns,” the spokesperson said.
