With wind and rain set to dominate the weather forecast this St Valentine's weekend, love birds are advised to carry an umbrella if heading out for dinner or on dates.

Met Éireann has forecast a "dull and damp" morning for Friday, followed by a cloudy night, with plenty of mist and fog.

However, drier conditions are expected during the day, extending from the South-West further north as Friday progresses.

For anyone hoping to for a bit of sunshine to add to the love in the air, unfortunately, Met Éireann says "most areas will stay dull".

St Valentine's night will be a wet one, with scattered outbreaks of rain affecting areas in the south of the country.

"Outbreaks of rain or drizzle will affect the south and east but it will be drier in other areas,"

Lowest temperatures of 2C to 7C are predicted.

The forecaster has issued a status yellow rain warning for Waterford, with "spells of heavy rain expected".

That warning, which came into effect at 6pm on Thursday, will remain in place until 12pm on Friday.

Possible impacts of the heavy rain include spot flooding, poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions.

A status yellow rain warning which was issued for Cork on Thursday brought heavy rain overnight, and remained in place until 8am on Friday.

It had warned of: "Spells of heavy rain in south Cork through this afternoon [Thursday], evening and overnight."

Mist and fog is expected to continue on Saturday, with cloudy conditions expected.

"There will be outbreaks of rain and drizzle, most frequent in the south and east," according to Met Éireann.

Highest temperatures of between 4C and 12C are predicted, with light to moderate winds.

Some spot flooding is on the cards for Saturday night, with persistent rain forecast overnight.

"Drier elsewhere, though there still will be patches of rain and drizzle about," the forecaster said.

Sunday's forecast looks to be more promising, with "patchy rain" and dry intervals, followed by hazy sunny spells.

"Largely cloudy elsewhere with patchy rain and drizzle at times."
