Irishman reported missing in Sardinia

An Irishman has been reported missing on the Italian island of Sardinia.

An Irishman has been reported missing on the Italian island of Sardinia.

Italian broadcaster RAI is reporting that the 39-year-old went missing on Thursday afternoon. 

It is understood that he had been hiking the Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara.

The man had been on a walking trip with his family and went for a hike on his own early on Thursday morning. His family subsequently reported him missing at approximately 2pm on Thursday afternoon.

A search operation began thereafter and is still ongoing.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs told the Irish Examiner it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance. 

"As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the details of individual cases," the spokesperson said.
