Member of mountain rescue crew dies following fall on Sligo mountain

Benbulben, Co Sligo. 

A member of Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue has died following a fall on Benbulben mountain, Co Sligo on Tuesday night.

It is understood the man, ages in his 40s had slipped while climbing a gully above the Benbulben Forest Walk, at around 10pm

The mountain climber suffered a head injury in the fall. Despite an intensive rescue operation overnight, he was unable to be revived.

The local man was described as an "experienced climber" by the mountain rescue team.

His body has been removed from the scene and taken to Sligo University Hospital where a post mortem will take place.

The local coroner has been notified, a Garda spokesperson said.
