Garda hospitalised after being hit by car during armed incident in Dublin

Gardaí had been responding to a domestic violence report.

A garda was hospitalised after being hit by a car driven by a man armed with a samurai sword in Dublin on Monday night.

It is understood the suspect drove his car into the young garda when he was trying to arrest him.

Gardaí had been responding to a domestic violence report.

When trying to flee the scene, the suspect first reversed towards female gardaí who evaded the vehicle, but the driver then hit a male garda when he tried to arrest him.

The driver also rammed Garda patrol cars when trying to escape the scene.

Garda Representative Association (GRA) representative for west Dublin, Detective Mark Ferris, said it is “deeply regrettable” that yet another young garda was injured on duty.

“He was attacked while responding to a reported incident of domestic violence in the suburb of Castleknock.

“While trying to effect an arrest, the armed assailant struck the garda with his car and went on to ram other patrol cars as he fled the area.

“I spoke with my injured colleague who has, thankfully, been released from hospital. He is recovering and naturally is in shock having been struck by the assailant’s vehicle.

“Reflecting on what was a lethally dangerous situation, he 'feels blessed' that he wasn’t run over and his injuries are non-life threatening.”

Det Ferris said that as a representative for gardaí, it was incumbent on him and the GRA to highlight the “ongoing law and order crisis afflicting the State”.

As public servants on the sharp end of the criminal justice system we are vulnerable to the flagrant lack of regard a minority of violent criminals have for the conventions of civilised society.

“No member of An Garda Síochána deserves to be injured or face assault while on duty but, unfortunately, too often that is the case and there are simply not enough gardaí to protect their colleagues when they come under attack.”

Garda headquarters said in a statement that no arrests have been made at this time but gardaí are following definite lines of enquiry.

“While responding to an incident at an apartment complex in the Castleknock area of Dublin 15 shortly before 1am this morning, Monday, May 20, 2024, a garda was struck by a car and injured," the statement said.

"He was taken to the hospital for treatment and later discharged. He remains off duty at this time.

"Garda welfare services have been put in place for the Garda member and his colleagues.

"Investigations are ongoing."
