RTÉ 'unaware' ex-employee jailed for possessing child sex abuse imagery until after resignation

In a statement on Wednesday, RTÉ confirmed that Greene resigned unexpectedly in March 2024. The broadcaster says he gave no reason for his resignation.
RTÉ has said it was “completely unaware” that one of its former employees faced charges, or had been convicted and sentenced at a local Circuit Criminal Court, for possessing sexual images of children until after his resignation from the broadcaster.
Justin Greene, 52, a former studio news director, with an address in Enfield, Meath, pleaded guilty at Trim Circuit Criminal Court on October 6, 2023, to possessing six images classed as child pornography under Section 2 of the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act 1998 at his home on May 15, 2022.
On March 6 of this year, Judge John Martin sentenced Greene to 18 months in prison with the final six months suspended — on the condition that he co-operates fully with the probation service and undergoes all counselling treatment and courses directed by the service.
In a statement on Wednesday, RTÉ confirmed that Greene resigned unexpectedly in March 2024. The broadcaster says he gave no reason for his resignation.
“RTÉ was completely unaware that Mr Greene faced charges, or had been convicted and sentenced at a local Circuit Court, until after they received his resignation,” the RTÉ statement reads.
The broadcaster says it “established some limited details about the nature of the case” following Greene’s resignation, but that it was “unclear at the time if there were any restrictions that would have been in place as a result of the proceedings to protect the identity of any victims”.
“No communication from An Garda Síochána has been received by RTÉ on this matter."
RTÉ also says Greene had no allocated RTÉ mobile phone.
The broadcaster added that it maintains “the highest standards of digital safety and security" in its operations, and that it implements "advanced firewall filtering technologies" across its networks and digital infrastructure".
