Three more deaths on Irish roads after separate crashes in Dublin, Cork and Wicklow

There have now been 61 deaths on the country's roads since the start of the year - the equivalent of four fatalities every seven days.

Over the weekend three more were added to the tragic total with the deaths of a pedestrian in his 40s in Midleton in Cork in the early hours of Sunday morning a motorcyclist in his 20s in Co Wicklow on Saturday evening and a van driver in his 60s in Dublin also this morning.

There have now been more than a third more people killed on the roads since the start of the year than there were in the same period in 2023.

The incident in Dublin happened at around 6:15am on Sunday morning on the Churchtown Road Upper in Dundrum.

The driver, and only occupant of the van, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A technical examination of the scene has been conducted by forensic collision investigators and the road which was closed earlier, has since reopened.

Gardaí are now appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

In a statement, a Garda spokesperson said: "Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area of the Churchtown Road Upper between 6am and 6:30am are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Dundrum Garda Station on 01 666 5600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."

Elsewhere, a man in his 40s has died after he was hit a car in Midleton.

The incident occurred at around 1.30am on Sunday morning on the N25 eastbound at Water-Rock.

Gardaí were called to the scene, where the pedestrian was pronounced dead.

No other serious injuries were reported to the other people involved.

The road is currently closed and diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

A spokesperson said: "Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N25 Eastbound between 1:15am and 1:30am are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Midleton Garda Station on 021 4621550, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."

Separately, a motorcyclist died after crashing on Saturday evening at 6.30pm.

The man in his 20s, was taken to Beaumont Hospital with serious injuries. He was later pronounced deceased.

A technical examination of the scene has been conducted by Forensic Collision Investigators and the road has since reopened.
