An Irish woman who was killed in New York will be laid to rest in her hometown on Monday.
Sarah McNally, 41, who is originally from Co Longford, died from stab wounds on Saturday while she was at work in the Maspeth area.
Marcin Pieciak, aged 36, was arraigned before a sitting of Queens County Criminal Court on charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon on Thursday.
The court was told Ms McNally was working as a bartender at the popular Queens establishment when Mr Pieciak allegedly walked in and fatally stabbed her before then injuring himself.
District Attorney Melinda Katz said the nature of the incident was one which had left the community of Queens and Ms McNally’s hometown of Longford in a state of numbed disbelief.
“This is an attack that shocked the community,” she said. “It was unprovoked and a devastating loss for the family. We are using every resource to make sure there is accountability”.
Mr Pieciak, of 76th Street in Glendale, was described in court as the partner of the deceased. He is alleged to have stabbed her in the neck before turning the knife on himself to cut his neck and back.
Ms McNally was rushed to hospital where she was pronounced dead while Mr Pieciak was treated for his injuries.
Some of the McNally family have flown to the US to help repatriate her body through the Kevin Bell Trust. In updated details on RIP.ie, her family said the funeral of their only child will take place on Monday, April 8.
