'Unity can triumph over fear' - Lord Mayor highlights Tomás MacCurtain's courage in rallying call to fight Covid-19
The Lord Mayor of Cork has urged people to emulate the courage of Lord Mayor Tomás MacCurtain, murdered 100 years ago today, and to unite to defeat Covid-19.
In an inspirational open letter published on www.irishexaminer.com this morning, Cllr John Sheehan said MacCurtain embodied what Aristotle called the first virtue – courage.
"In the coming weeks and months let us try and emulate that courage, let us come together to find the strength and perseverance to meet this challenge head-on," he said.
A GP with over 30-years of experience, Mr Sheehan said fear and anxiety is understandable.
But he said if people unite and follow medical advice around hand-washing, society can face this threat, overcome it and rebuild.
"The vast, vast majority of us will be okay if we show a united front in this battle," he said.

A range of events to mark the centenary of MacCurtain's murder have been cancelled, including a reenactment of the inquest into his death, a commemorative Mass and a bust unveiling, which were to be attended by President Michael D Higgins.
Mr Sheehan will instead attend a private wreath laying ceremony at MacCurtain's grave in St Finbarr's cemetery today, along with MacCurtain's grand-daughter, Fionnuala MacCurtain.
Today, the Irish Examiner publishes a special 16-page supplement on MacCurtain and that tumultuous time in Irish history.
It also launches a book, Witness to Murder, in association with Cork City Council, in which historical Kieran McCarthy delves into the Irish Examiner's archives from that time to provide a detailed day-by-day account of the lengthy inquest into MacCurtain's murder.
