Eoghan Murphy warns water shortages may continue to September

The Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy has warned that there is a risk of water shortages in September unless there is significant rainfall soon.

Mr Murphy told Drivetime on RTÉ Radio 1 that consideration is being given to lowering water pressure at night for next week in order to manage water supplies.

He said he was "very concerned" about low water stocks and that "there is a risk of shortages as we look ahead to September".

"The level of rain is nowhere near what we need to replenish our lakes and reservoirs," he said.

Mr Murphy said the hosepipe ban will continue throughout July and possibly into August.

He said he would like to be in a position where severe restrictions do not have to implemented, however, reducing the water pressure at night is still being considered.
