Simon Coveney has said, however, that the government is committed to finding out exactly what happened.

The Waterford basketball coach was convicted of sexually abusing a number of teenage boys in the 1980’s.

Speaking in the Dail Simon Coveney said the government believed that persons who make allegations of sexual abuse are entitled to have their claims fully investigated and where appropraite prosecuted it would not take any action that risks compromising other investigations.

Mr Coveney's comments follow calls earlier this year by abuse survivors for a full inquiry into the activities of the former basketball coach.
