Irish Rail is defending increases in the cost of parking at train stations.

Many commuter stations increased the daily amount from €4 to €4.50 this week.

Parking for the day at Kent station in Cork, and Dublin's Connolly and Heuston stations now costs €9.50 a day, which marks another 50 cent hike.

Irish Rail says it is the first increase in three years.
