Medical emergency as transatlantic flight diverts to Shannon

A transatlantic flight has diverted to Shannon Airport this afternoon after a passenger fell ill on board.

Air France flight AF-344 was travelling from Paris to Montreal in Canada when the crew declared a medical emergency.

The Boeing 777-330 jet just crossed the Irish east coast when the crew advised controllers of their emergency and requested permission to divert to Shannon.

The pilot also requested that an ambulance be standing by for the aircraft when it landed.

As the flight descended towards Shannon, the crew sought permission to jettison some aviation fuel to ensure they would touch down within safe landing weight limits.

The flight landed at 3.10pm and was met at the terminal by emergency medical services.

The passenger was removed to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.
