A member of the Defence Forces is in hospital after being injured during a parachuting training exercise.

The soldier suffered a hard landing during a routine training exercise in Custume Barracks in Athlone, at around midday today.

The injured man was taken to Tallaght Hospital in Dublin, where he is described as being responsive to medical treatment.

A Defence Forces spokesperson said the injured soldier is a highly experienced member of their Parachute Team.
