A young woman is recovering in hospital after she was rescued from a Co Clare river by a member of An Garda Síochána.
The incident happened at around 5.30am today in the Wood Quay area of Ennis.
A passing garda patrol was alerted to a woman in the River Fergus and one member entered the river to save the woman while another called for further assistance.
A second woman, believed to be the casualty's friend, is also understood to have jumped into the water to help.
The woman was brought ashore by the garda and handed over to ambulance personnel.
Two units of Ennis fire and rescue service, including a specialist river rescue team, had also been alerted but were stood down once it had been confirmed the casualty had been taken to safety.
The woman was assessed by paramedics before being removed by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.
