Priest: 'If it had been another family something would have been done' about Carrickmines fire

Masses will be held today to mark the first anniversary of a fire which killed 11 people in Dublin.

The services will remember the victims of the blaze at a halting site in Carrickmines, which included an unborn baby.

The graves of members of the Lynch and Gilbert families will be blessed afterwards.

Fr Dermot Lane is the parish priest of Balally, where one of today's masses will take place.

He has warned that although there was a "great awakening" at the time of the tragedy, people forget too quickly.

Fr Lane said: "And when we forget, we run the risk of repeating the same tragedy, and that's why it's so important.

"That is why I feel, myself, that if it had been another family something would have been done."
