A politician who was arrested in Cork three times over the weekend has been released from garda custody.

The man - who is in his 30s - was detained for drink related offences while attending the Indiependence Music Festival in Mitchelstown.

It is alleged that the man assaulted a garda after being ejected from the event.

The politician - who is not from Cork - was later arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

He was released yesterday morning at around 9am.

A file is now being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions in relation to the alleged assault.
