Easter Rising leaders remembered at Dublin ceremonies

Four of the executed leaders of the Easter Rising have been remembered at separate ceremonies in Dublin today.

Con Colbert, Eammon Ceannt, Micheal Mallin, and Sean Heuston were shot dead in the Stonebreakers Yard of Kilmainham Gaol on this day 100 years ago.

At 25, Sean Heuston was the youngest of the executed leaders.

Heuston led the rebels who occupied the Mendicity Institute on the River Liffey, near Heuston Station, which was later named in his honour.

Capuchin Friar Paul Murphy recounts the memoirs of Friar Albert Bibby from May 1916, who was with Sean Heuston in the final moments of his life.

"He awaited the end, not only with the calmness and fortitude which peace of mind brings to noble souls, but during the last quarter of an hour, he spoke of soon meeting again Pádraig Mac Piarais and other leaders who had already gone before him."
