Galway farmer looks favourite to succeed Eddie Downey as new IFA president

Galway dairy farmer Joe Healy looks set to become the next president of Irish Farmer’s Association.

Voting is well underway in the election, which was prompted by the resignation of Eddie Downey last year over revelations of high pay at the top of the organisation.

A win for Healy would make him only the second IFA president to come from the west of Ireland.

The count takes place in Castleknock, Dublin 15 with three candidates in the race.

Henry Burns (Laois), Joe Healy (Galway) and Flor McCarthy (Kerry) are all vying for the position.

The election count will also take place for the Vice-President and Munster Chairperson.
