Savita's widower agrees out-of-court settlement

An out-of-court settlement has been made in a medical negligence case taken by Savita Halappanavar’s widower Praveen.

University Hospital Galway had previously apologised after a review found that “inadequate assessment and monitoring” contributed towards her death.

On October 21, 2012, Savita Halappanavar attended UHG complaining of back pain.

She was 17 weeks' pregnant with her first child and was told she was going to miscarry.

Her waters broke overnight but it would be another three days before she delivered the foetus.

A few days later, she died from multi-organ failure arising from septic shock and E.coli.

A jury in her inquest returned a unanimous verdict of death by medical misadventure and a HIQA report found a number of missed opportunities in the lead-up to her death may have changed the outcome.

Her death made headlines around the world when it emerged she had been refused a termination because the foetus still had a heartbeat.

Praveen claimed she had been told it was not allowed because Ireland was a Catholic country.

His medical negligence case was due to get underway tomorrow but it has been settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.
