There has been a serious road accident near Togher in Cork today.

The accident happened at around 5.30pm when a car and a 4 x4 were in collision two miles east of Togher Village on the Bantry to Crookestown Rd (locally known as 'Bantry Line') R585.

The male driver of the car, aged in his 30s, was seriously injured and was airlifted to Cork University Hospital (CUH) where he is described as being in a critical condition.

The male driver of the 4x4 was also taken to CUH. His injuries are described as non-life-threatening.

There was no one else in either vehicles.

The road is closed to facilitate a forensic collision examination and there are diversions in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them at Clonakilty Garda station on 023 8821570, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
