A social media tracker has found that the General Election got the most mentions on Twitter for accounts registered in Ireland.

A social media tracker has found that the General Election got the most mentions on Twitter for accounts registered in Ireland.

The results look back on trends over the past weekend, starting from 6pm on Friday and ending at 6pm yesterday evening, and found that the #GE16 and #GE2016 hashtags got more than 46,000 mentions.

However, it also found that the #right2water and #right2change hashtags were second and third in the rankings for the weekend, albeit with much lower totals of 3,830 and 3,102 respectively.

* 15,124 unique accounts contributed to total, up 70% on last weekend;

* #right2water and #right2change second and third most popular tags of the weekend;

* Labour Party most active political party and most active #GE16 account in Ireland.
