1,026 voters were questioned for the survey on Monday and Tuesday of this week.

Labour leader Joan Burton says the party will rebound from the poor result.

Minister for Public Expenditure Brendan Howlin says the poll results are not being reflected on the doorsteps.

He said: "And the one thing that is consistently said to me, even up to last night, was the lack of movement in public opinion. That seems to be the hallmark of this election campaign, something that is almost unique in my 30 years of campaigning.

"The one thing I'm certain of is that we are not at 4%, or anything in the ballpark of 4%, I'm absolutely sure of that.

"If you ask me what figure we are on, I don’t know. I don’t know what anybody else is on either, and anybody who tells you that they do is not telling you the truth."
