Thieves have tried to steal a cash machine from a railway station in Portadown in Co Armagh.

Police received a report of a window being smashed in the Woodhouse Street area of the town at 3.50am this morning.

Responders arrived on scene to discover straps around the ATM, and a vehicle had been used to try and drag it away.

Inspector Philip Shepherd told the Belfast Telegraph: "I would appeal to anyone who would have been in this area and noticed any suspicious activity to contact Lurgan Police Station on the non emergency number 101.

"Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111."
