Dáil begins debating a motion of no confidence in Tánaiste Joan Burton

The Dáil's begun debating a motion of no confidence in Tánaiste Joan Burton.

It follows her decision to name David Begg as chairman of the Pensions Board without a public appointment process.

The government has tabled a counter-motion which is expected to pass easily when the vote is called tomorrow night.

Independent TD John Halligan began the debate - and took issue with David Begg, who has dismissed the scandal because of its relatively low salary.

"I work out of an office where part of that office give children their breakfast every morning because they don't have breakfast going to school.

"How would that 20,000 fit with that family?

"How would that 20,000 fit with all of the thousands of families in Ireland?

"So you can see why I'm angry and why I'm upset."
