PJ Mara to be laid to rest today

Former Government press secretary PJ Mara will be laid to rest in Co Galway today.

The 73-year-old, who was known for his work as advisor to the former Taoiseach Charlie Haughey, passed away in hospital on Friday following a long illness. He had been in hospital since late last year.

Mr Mara also served as Government Press Secretary for Fianna Fáil.

Most famous for his central role in former Taoiseach Charles J Haughey’s controversial time as leader of the country, he went on be Bertie Ahern’s director of elections in 1997, 2002 and 2007.

Mr Haughey resigned in 1992 and PJ Mara went into the private sector shortly afterwards, where his skills were in demand and clients included Tony O'Reilly, Tony Ryan and Denis O'Brien.

Mr Mara's funeral Mass took place in Dublin yesterday. He will be buried at in Mount Cross Cemetery in Kinvara, Co Galway at 3pm today.
