FF wants to give motorists chance to wipe penalty points from licence with day-long driving course

Fianna Fáil is proposing that motorists could have penalty points wiped from their licence if they undertake a special refresher course.

The opposition party is expected to launch the plan as part of its election manifesto.

Drivers who notch up more than six penalty points would be able to do a day-long course which the motorist would pay for themselves.

If they complete it successfully, they could have as many as three points expunged.

Fianna Fáil's Transport spokesman, Timmy Dooley, said: "What we're proposing is the introduction of a scheme whereby somebody has an opportunity once every three years to do an advanced course, and in return for doing the course, three points will be removed.

"That's not going to change significantly for those who are repeat offenders or who continue to break the law."
