Donegal man to be re-sentenced for car crash that killed eight in 2010

The man behind Ireland's worst ever car crash will be back in court today for a fresh sentence hearing after his two-year jail term was set aside on appeal.

Shaun Kelly of Hill Road in Ballymagan, Co. Donegal, killed eight people while driving towards Buncrana in July 2010.

Mr Kelly watched the 2010 World Cup final in a pub in Clonmany, Co. Donegal. He was not drinking, but allowed seven of his friends cram into his car afterwards.

None of them were wearing seatbelts when he crashed at speed into Hugh Friel’s car on their way to Buncrana.

Mr Friel, a 66-year-old farmer, was on his way home from bingo when their paths tragically crossed.

Shaun Kelly was the only survivor.

The 26-year-old was jailed for two years this time last year, but his sentence was ruled to be “unduly lenient” following an appeal last month.

A fresh sentence hearing will take place today.
