The Director General of Forensic Science Ireland has said the new DNA database will significantly assist gardai with criminal investigations.

The new system, which is going live today, will help Gardaí to close the net on serial offenders.

It will run out of the Forensic Science Ireland base in the Phoenix Park in Dublin.

The Director General of Forensic Science Ireland is Dr Sheila Willis who has said they have been looking forward to this for some time: "Today is the commencement of the DNA database system which has been looked forward to in a way by ourselves, for a long time

"And although we are the custodian and we are operating it, the real value is to crime investigation, It is a hugely significant development in assisting An Garda Síochana in the investigation of crime.
