The Tánaiste has accused the opposition of being 'trigger happy' in demanding Commission's of Investigation.

Joan Burton's comments come after the Fennelly Commission raised concerns about how it is even going to deal with the taping of phone calls in Garda stations.

In an interim report published this evening, Mr Justice Nial Fennelly notes that he has not even worked out yet how to sample 13 years of recordings that are on tapes from between 1995 and 2008.

Tonight Joan Burton says problems identified with the workload for inquiries need to be taken into account.

"I must say that I think the Commission of Inquiry structure has been very good, but clearly questions have now arisen as you say, and we wait on the reflections of the judges as to how they best see the issue of answers being given.

"But overall, do I think some of the opposition have been trigger happy in reaching for a Commission of Inquiry about anything and everything? Perhaps yes."
