Reflective gear on rural roads could save you from a 'nightmare'

Small changes to our road habits could save lives this Christmas time according to the Road Safety Authority.

So far this year 131 people have died on Irish roads.

17 months ago today Maggie Bonner's father died when he was hit by her boyfriend's car on a rural road in Mayo.

Her father wasn't wearing reflective gear, and Maggie says a regular evening became a nightmare.

"It was very difficult because when I came into the scene, it was from a phone call that Michael rang me and he told me he had ran over someone on the road and I needed to get in there fast

"So I got my brother to bring me in and I was there comforting him and it wasn't until several hours later when it started getting bright that I realised it was my own dad laying there on the ground.

"That's when the nightmare unveiled itself."
