A 47-year-old man has died after being knocked down near Thurles.

The incident occurred at Turtulla Cross, Turtulla, on the Horse and Jockey road yesterday afternoon just after 3 o'clock.

The 47 year old man was knocked down by a car being driven by a 32-year-old man with three children also in the vehicle.

None of them were injured in the collision.

The injured pedestrian was treated at scene by ambulance staff and then brought to South Tipperary General Hospital in Clonmel where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

A post mortem is expected to be carried out later today.

The 47-year-old man, named locally as Jackie Griffin, is very well known in the Thurles area.

He was heavily involved in the Thurles Sarsfield GAA club as a selector for the senior hurlers while he was also involved in the military.
