Coppinger: Modular homes for the homeless plan may face opposition

The Government’s plans for 500 modular homes for the homeless may face objections according to an opposition TD.

Anti Austerity Alliance TD Ruth Coppinger has said she does not think the plan to bring in the prefabricated houses to accommodate the homeless will work.

She has raising concerns about the proposals, particularly the promise to have 22 of the units in place before Christmas in Dublin.

Deputy Coppinger has said the Government should be tackling the issue in a different way.

“What they could be doing instead is that they could be using NAMA hotels and refurbishing them so people can cook. People would have cooking facilities and they would be located near where the children go to school,” Ms Coppinger said.

“I think that that would be better and actually have a building programme of building houses in places where they are needed.”
