Revenue seizes almost 10 million cigarettes in Slane

Almost 10 million cigarettes with a retail value of over €5.25m have been seized in Slane, Co Meath.
The haul was uncovered yesterday evening after an intelligence-led operation by Revenue officers, supported by An Garda Síochána.
The container, which had travelled from Vietnam via Singapore and Rotterdam, arrived into Dublin Port last Thursday.
The ‘American Legend’ brand cigarettes were described on the manifest as ‘timber furniture’.
Investigations are continuing.
The cigarettes represent a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €4.2m, assuming that they would have displaced the equivalent full tax paid quantity of cigarettes.
