Efforts being made to recognise needs of transgender community in schools

A transgender student has said he felt like his identity was invisible during his time at an all-girls school.

Sam Blanckensee was speaking as details emerge of government efforts to have the needs of young transgender people recognised in the country's schools.

Discussions at the Department of Education yesterday began the process of dealing with issues like uniforms and changing rooms.

Sam came out in 6th year at his all girls school and he has said that he had some very difficult days:

“I felt like my identity was invisible during the school day which it was because nobody knew and even people I had told couldn’t call me Sam during school because the teachers didn’t know at the time and my friends weren’t really able to support me through it.”
