Visibility is less than 100 metres in places as fog blankets country

An orange weather warning is in place across the country this morning because of heavy fog.

Motorists are being warned that visibility is reduced to less than 100 metres.

They are being urged to switch on their dipped headlights and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

Willemien Phelan from Met Éireann said that the fog cover will be slow to lift, expecially in some midland and western areas.

"There is very little wind, so the fog will hang about wherever it forms. That situation will continue through the day and it could be slow to life. All areas are at risk," she said.

Met Éireann says tonight will be calm, dry and rather cloudy with mist and fog patches forming but cloud will prevent the development of widespread fog. Lowest temperatures of 5C to 8C.
