The Taoiseach's being asked to urgently intervene to help 300 families who are facing evacuation from an apartment block which doesn't meet fire safety standards.

Residents at Longboat Quay in Dublin's Docklands have been told they will face a fire brigade evacuation order unless they provide €4m for remedial works.

Enda Kenny says he will need more information about the situation before he can get involved.

He has been asked to make a direct appeal to developer Bernard McNamara to pay for the work.

Richard Eardley lives in one of the apartments.

He says fire alarms have been upgraded, but the problem lies with the building: "So we now have an absolutely fabulous state of the art fire alarm system so the threat to life has been mitigated, but we still have a defective building and those defects need to be addressed."
