USI calls on Government to reduce college registration fee

University students are today calling for the current registration fee to be reduced, to reflect the improved economic situation.

It is one of a list of demands being made by the Union of Students in Ireland today at the launch of its pre-Budget submission.

USI president Kevin Donoghue admitted that while it is not realistic to scrap the fee, it is time to ease the financial pressure on students and their parents.

"The fee currently stands at €3,000, and it was increased by €250 in successive Budgets until it reached that point," he said.

"At the time, they said that it was in line with the economic situation, so in line with the economic recovery, we would like to see that reduced over a period of time.

"USI is in favour of fully Exchequer-funded education, so that's the ideal, but in this Budget we'd realise that you'd need to move towards that."
