'Abortion doesn't belong in the constitution' says Clare Daly

Pro Choice campaigner Clare Daly says the subject of abortion doesn't belong in the constitution.

The Independent TD is calling for a referendum to repeal the 8th Amendment to be held as soon as possible.

The article which was voted on in 1983, gives equal right to life to the unborn, as to that of a pregnant woman.

Last week, the Taoiseach said no referendum on the issue should be called until a replacement article is carefully considered.

Ms Daly said the 8th Amendment should be removed so that women's reproductive and medical choices aren't restricted by the constitution

“There’s no place for this in a constitution, it’s a private matter between a woman and her doctor and why it would have any more status in a constitution than any other type of medical operation is absolutely ridiculous,” she said.
