Update at 8pm, by Ann Murphy. Thousands of people are filing past the coffin of Thomas Kent tonight as his remains lie in state at Collins Barracks in Cork.

The Castlelyons man's family, including his three nieces, arrived at the chapel at the barracks at 5.30pm this evening, for prayers at 6pm. Bishop John Buckley joined army chaplain Fr Gerry O'Neill and parish priest of Castlelyons, Fr Gerard Coleman, for the short service.

Dignitaries including Cork's Lord Mayor, Cllr Chris O'Leary, Mayor of County Cork, Cllr John Paul O'Shea, and Mayor of Derry, Cllr Elisha McCallion, joined people of all ages to pay their respects to Thomas Kent.

He was executed at Cork Prison on May 9, 1916 after a shoot out at the Kent family home in Bawnard, Castlelyons eight days earlier.

He was only one of two people executed outside of Dublin in connection with the 1916 Easter Rising, the other was Roger Casement. His remains were exhumed earlier this year.

The remains of the executed rebel were discovered in June, when an investigation led by the National Monuments Service of the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht discovered and exhumed remains that were found near a monument in Cork that bore his name.

A DNA test carried out on them confirmed they were those of Thomas Kent.
