The satirical news website removed the story after Meagher Solicitors sent a cease and desist letter.

Waterford Whispers News removes article after letter from Denis O'Brien's solicitors

The popular satirical news site Waterford Whispers News took down an article last night after a cease and desist letter was sent by Denis O'Brien's solicitors.

The article, in which O'Brien features heavily, was published to the site yesterday morning and was shared widely online. The piece, which refers to a 'parallel universe', also featured a digitally altered image of Mr O’Brien.

Waterford Whispers News received a letter yesterday afternoon, marked private and confidential, from Meagher Solicitors asking that all references to the article be taken down from the website, as well as Twitter and Facebook, by 6pm, claiming it was defamatory.

O'Brien's solicitors also said they had been given instruction to take "the necessary steps to vindicate our client's good name and reputation".

Waterford Whispers removed the story yesterday evening but Colm Williamson, the editor, shared a photo of the letter on his social media.

The Waterford Whispers Twitter account has been tweeting with #JeSuisWWN, a nod to the #JeSuisCharlie hashtag that was widely shared in the aftermath of the Charlie Hebdo shootings.

The article and its subsequent deletion generated a huge amount of discussion on Facebook, Twitter and Reddit overnight.
