Denis O'Brien launches legal action against Dáil committee

Businessman Denis O'Brien is getting ready to sue the Dáil's Committee on Procedure and Privileges.

According to a report carried by The Irish Times this morning, Mr O’Brien has named every member of the committee including the Ceann Comhairle Seán Barrett in a submission to the High Court.

Mr O’Brien is unhappy with the CPP’s refusal to say that Independent TD Catherine Murphy abused her Dáil privilege by making allegations about Denis O'Brien and his Esat Digifone license in the chamber.

It is the first time the Committee has ever been subjected to legal proceedings.

Journalist Sarah Bardon, who broke the story, said every member of the committee has received legal advice through the Oireachtas, and may take their own legal advice outside the house.

The case is due for mention on October 7 in the High Court.
