Court of Appeal to hear challenge to Marriage Referendum

An application to legally challenge the result of the Marriage Referendum will be heard by the Court of Appeal today.

It comes after the High Court refused leave to Gerry Walshe, an electrician from Lisdeen Road, Co Clare and Maurice Lyons, a gardener with an address at Callan, Co Kilkenny - to lodge proceedings against the vote.

The action has delayed the Government's plans to have the legislation enacted by the autumn.

The applicants will have to prove that there was an irregularity or wrongdoing that would have affected the outcome.
