Number of prisoners injured after roof-top protest at Cloverhill

A number of prisoners have been taken to hospital following a protest at Cloverhill Prison in Dublin.

Two prisoners got on top of the roof during the protest, where they remain this evening.

This morning at the prison in West Dublin a group of prisoners refused to return to their cells from the exercise yard.

During the incident, two prisoners climbed on to the roof of the prison and refused to get down.

Despite efforts by prison officers to resolve the situation, one prisoner assaulted a second, causing him injuries.

Members of the control and restraint teams went into the yard to remove the remaining 15 prisoners, who refused to return to their cells.

A number of these prisoners were also injured and damage was caused to the prison.

A spokesperson for the Prison Service said the matter will now be subject to an internal investigation and an investigation by An Garda Síochána.
