Two arrested for possession of firearms in Ballymun

Two men have been arrested in Dublin after a firearm and ammunition were found in a car they were travelling in.

Gardaí had received a report of suspicious activity at Carton Way, Ballymun at around 5pm yesterday evening.

They searched the vehicle and found a 9mm handgun in the footwell of the front passenger seat, together with three rounds of 9mm ammunition, and a silver silencer.

Both men were taken to Coolock Garda Station, where they are being detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

This means they can be held for 72 hours.
