Limerick and Tipperary have fewest energy-efficient buildings

Limerick city and Tipperary have the lowest proportion of high-rated energy efficiency buildings in the country.

Figures released today by the CEO show the Building Energy Ratings (BER) for each county, with Limerick and Tipperary - at 5% and 6% - having the fewest A or B rated buildings.

Other areas with a low proportion of A or B ratings include Offaly, Waterford City, Galway City, and Roscommon - all with just 7%.

Dublin has the highest level of homes with an A or B rating. Generally, newer properties receive more A or B ratings than older ones, and mid-floor apartments do better than those in basements, according to statistics from the CSO.

However, nationally, only 1% of buildings constructed between 2005- and 2009 have an A rating, while 40% of those built in the last five years earn the highest grade.

93% of those built since 2010 receive either an A or a B rating.
