LÉ Niamh to embark on migrant rescue mission

A second Irish naval vessel will set sail from Cork today, bound for Mediterranean for humanitarian search and rescue duty.

The LÉ Niamh will replace the LÉ Eithne, which was deployed to the area two months ago.

During that time, the Eithne rescued around 3,400 migrants from the Mediterranean north of Libya.

It's due to leave Malta today and return to Cork harbour.
