A 54-year-old man has been injured in a shooting in Limerick.

A 54-year-old man has been injured in a shooting in Limerick.

It happened at around 7am today close to the University of Limerick campus, as the victim made his way to the UL gym.

The 54-year-old was approached by two armed and masked men as he parked his car in the grounds of the University of Limerick at 6.50am today.

The man who was shot is being treated for his injuries at University Hospital in the city.

The scene has been sealed off for a technical examination and a car which was found burned out a short distance away is being forensically examined by gardaí.

It is understood the victim was known to gardaí.
